Shay Given perfectly picked out the moment where Celtic’s season derailed, all because of one decision.
The Hoops have had three managers this season and look like they could miss out on the league title, with the Bhoys sitting third in the table with only eight games left.
Martin O’Neill was brought back for a second time following a disastrous 33 days in charge for Wilfried Nancy.
Celtic chose to appoint Nancy days before a crucial week of fixtures, and Given thinks that is the point where everything fell apart.
What do you think is the main reason Wilfried Nancy couldn’t buy a win as Celtic manager? 🤔
The stats are damning…
Shay Given says timing of Wilfried Nancy appointment affected season
Nancy’s arrival came days before a huge league game against Hearts, which they ended up losing, before falling to defeat against Roma in the Europa League and St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup final.
All momentum was killed by that point and Given said that O’Neill should have stayed for an extra week before handing over the reins.

Speaking on the Overlap Fan debate, he said: “They should have given Martin seven more days. You had Hearts at home, Roma in the Europa League and St Mirren in the Cup Final.
“I thought it would have been a nice way to finish, Martin picking up the trophy, and going ‘thank you, Martin’. Then Nancy comes in, it didn’t make any sense at all.”
Celtic board are to blame for derailing the season
While nobody foreshadowed how bad Nancy was going to be in his eight games in charge, all roads lead back to the board.
It was their decision to make the switch at a time that was never appropriate to bring in someone who was going to make such drastic changes in a short space of time.
How many points will Celtic end the season with?
Will it be enough to win the league? 😅
Tactics, changing formations is one thing but the board are the main culprits here and if they end up with no league title, that weekend in December will be earmarked as the deciding point.
