Liam Shaw’s Celtic future after another forgotten loan spell

Celtic had a number of players out on loan last season who were all looking to get first-team football to either boost their chances of progressing their Parkhead careers or to use the opportunity as a shop window.

In total, Celtic have 15 players all plying their trade on a temporary basis elsewhere with 14 of them set to return to Paradise at the end of this month.

There has been plenty of opinion written on the likes of youngsters like Bosun Lawal, Johnny Kenny and Matthew Anderson who could have a long-term future at the club.

However, players like Hyeokkyu Kwon, Marco Tilio and Mikey Johnston are using their loan spells away to prove that they have the quality to be a Celtic player or at least perform at a different level away from the club.

Out of all the players currently on loan, there is one who is rarely spoken about despite being an Ange Postecoglou signing back in 2021.

Liam Shaw’s loan spell away from Celtic

Liam Shaw signed for Celtic as a fresh-faced 20-year old in June 2021. Used only twice by Ange Postecoglou, Shaw was shipped out on loan and has enjoyed temporary spells at Motherwell, Morecambe and is set to return from Wigan this summer.

Making a total of 26 appearances for The Latics, Shaws time at the League One club ended with a whimper after being dropped from the first-team squad for the final four games of the season. [Transfermarkt]

The highlight of the Englishman’s season was playing against Manchester United in the FA Cup. However, Shaw failed to make any impact in the game as The Red Devils easily brushed Wigan aside in a 2-0 win. [Fotmob]

Liam Shaw’s future at Celtic

Even the most optimistic person would have to concede that Shaw’s time at Celtic is effectively over. The fact that he’s been at the club for three years now and struggled to break into the first team squad is a strong indication that he is likely to be sold or sent out on loan again.

But to be fair to Shaw, he has had to contend with Celtic captain Callum McGregor, Tomoki Iwata and a midfield that at one point also had David Turnbull, Yosuke Ideguchi, Nir Bitton, Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley all vying for places.

With his loan spell at Wigan expiring on the 30th of June, Brendan Rodgers will get the chance to run the rule over Shaw but the likelihood is that the 23-year-old will be told that he should leave the club to pursue a career elsewhere.
