The glaring omission from the Celtic board’s Martin O’Neill statement should infuriate fans

Celtic have sacked Wilfried Nancy and brought Martin O’Neill back in for a second time this season.

Celtic sacked Nancy after just 33 days in charge which included losing to St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup final, Rangers in the Glasgow Derby and Hearts in the top-of-the-table clash in his first fixture.

The Frenchman was also found out by Dundee United and in the worst performance of the season as Celtic lost to Motherwell.

It was a shambolic appointment summed up by Celtic also allowing Paul Tisdale to leave the club as the board wield the axe this week.

But when the announcement was made that Martin O’Neill was returning to Celtic, there is a glaring omission from Dermot Desmond, Michael Nicholson and Brian Wilson’s statements that should anger the Hoops support.

The shambolic Celtic season under the Parkhead board

When Brendan Rodgers left Celtic, Dermot Desmond paid the problems of the season right at the Northern Irishman’s door.

Since then, Celtic have allowed Martin O’Neill to leave, Wilfried Nancy to come and overseen a 33-day spell where the first trophy of the season was lost, and let Rangers (who were 10th in the league in September) the chance to leapfrog Celtic into second place in the league.

Hearts have also increased their lead to six points after O’Neill drew level with them before he handed over the reins to Nancy.

Celtic’s lack of contrition and humility for this season’s shambles is a disgrace

But as Desmond, Nicholson and Wilson all welcomed O’Neill to Celtic there was not a hint of an apology to the Celtic supporters.

Desmond admitted the appointment didn’t work out, but took no accountability for the hiring of the Frenchman.

Wilson wished Nancy well for the future, but didn’t speak about being sorry for the shambolic 33 days of his tenure.

As for Nicholson, he spoke of his ‘respect’ for Nancy but showed none to the Celtic supporters by simply saying sorry for him and Tisdale’s part in this disaster of a season.

This is a Celtic board quick to point out the Hoops supporters’ alleged mistakes and scramble to punish them whenever they can, but hold themselves to no account for anything that has played out this season and into the first half of 2025.

And that should still burn every single Celtic supporter this week.
