The timing simply doesn’t feel right for Andy Robertson to join Celtic

We are now reaching an inevitable point of Andy Robertson’s career:

He is well into his 30s, being phased out of the Liverpool team and many are tipping him for a move to his beloved Celtic.

Robertson wears his Hoops allegiance on his sleeve, and he has been a key supporting act in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s recent move to Glasgow.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has hinted at his mate potentially following him to Celtic Park, and despite his Anfield contract expiring at the end of the season, the timing doesn’t feel right for Robertson to return.

Andy Robertson to Celtic timing may simply not be right

The Scottish National Team has been plagued by the dilemma created by Robertson and Kieran Tierney – two of the best Scottish players of their generation – both being left-backs.

Gordon Strachan managed it by using Tierney as a right-back, whilst Steve Clarke has enjoyed more success by allowing them to function in more suitable roles in a back five.

Unless Clarke is the Celtic manager at the start of next season – and stranger things have happened, by the way – the addition of Robertson in the summer would bring an immediate headache to the new manager.

Of course, you could argue that Tierney can’t be trusted to play 60 games in his season given well-documented issues with his body, and that Robertson would be an ideal candidate to share the left-back load.

But with efforts already underway for Marcelo Saracchi’s loan move to be made permanent, why fix what isn’t broken?

Robertson turned 32 last week; he’s no Kolo Toure or Freddie Ljungberg. He is simply too good to come in for a cheerleader role.

The time may well come for Robertson’s ‘prodigal son’ moment, but this summer doesn’t feel like the right one.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen – his comments on rejecting a move to Tottenham in January didn’t give a lot away.

The 2026 transfer window is still months away, but what is the number one position Celtic need to improve this summer?📝

Celtic-linked Andy Robertson on rejected Tottenham move

The Scotland captain said earlier this month: “There was obviously interest there [in January] – there were discussions had with both sets of clubs.

“But the decision was that I wanted to stay. We stayed at Liverpool and that was the decision made.”

He later said on his contract: “When a decision is made, and we’re getting to the point where I only have three months left on my contract, it will be announced to you guys.

“My thought process is: I want to win trophies at Liverpool.”
