Three winners and one loser as Celtic beat St Mirren, including super sub Hyunjun Yang

That was eventful for Celtic as they were made to work pretty hard for their points against St Mirren on Saturday evening.

Hours after Barry Ferguson lost his first home game in charge as Rangers manager against Motherwell, it was an ample chance for Brendan Rodgers to push his team closer to the Premiership title.

After an hour in Paisley, it seemed tricky because the scores were level at 2-2, but eventually, Celtic ran out 5-2 winners over St Mirren.

The points were deserved, with four different goalscorers, as the Bhoys are now 16 points clear at the top of the Premiership table.

Jeffrey Schlupp netted his first goal for the club following his deadline-day loan move from Crystal Palace.

Arne Engels continued his strong form from the spot, Hyunjun Yang scored a brace from the bench and Daizen Maeda was outstanding again.

Here at 67 Hail Hail, we take a look at the three winners and one loser from Celtic’s end-to-end encounter at St Mirren.

Give Jeffrey Schlupp a permanent Celtic contract after win over St Mirren

Schlupp – This isn’t good news for Greg Taylor because he was an unused substitute as Schlupp didn’t just make another start, but also netted his first goal for the club.

Given that Taylor’s contract is running out and a new deal is yet to be signed, then you don’t blame the Celtic faithful for wanting Schlupp signed up for next season.

Maeda – Is there any Celtic win where Maeda isn’t a winner? What a performance and what a season he is having.

That’s 26 goals in all competitions for the Japan international and you sense that he isn’t going to stop anytime soon.

Some feel Maeda is Player of the Year – and you can’t blame people for branding him with that label with months of the season left because that’s how good he has been.

Yang – Perhaps his best moment to date in a Celtic shirt and what improvement he has made during these last few months.

Over the festive period, Yang was handed a few extra starts than usual because of injuries and that has helped him dearly.

Yang seems to have more energy and quality to his game, as his positioning and composure to score his two headed goals against St Mirren were of high quality.

Liam Scales needs to find some form for Celtic

Unfortunately, the loser from Celtic’s win over St Mirren is Liam Scales

Auston Trusty started alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers, but the former had to go off in the first half because of a head injury.

As soon as Scales was introduced into the action, he gave away a free-kick that led to St Mirren’s equalising goals.

Last season, Scales had a breakthrough campaign and was outstanding, but he has seemed a little off colour now.

He is too erratic in his play and just needs to slow things down because everyone knows the quality is there.
