Why Celtic striker Adam Idah’s goalless international break doesn’t tell the full story

Celtic striker Adam Idah went through a tumultuous summer that saw his future up in the air before completing a permanent move to the Bhoys.

The Republic of Ireland international registered nine goals in 19 appearances last term, scoring at crucial times as Celtic claimed a domestic double.

Nevertheless, he has experienced limited involvement since returning to Glasgow. Idah started against St Mirren earlier in the month despite not being fully fit, either side of substitute outings against Hibernian and Rangers.

Still getting up to speed after his £9.5 million move, the Cork-born frontman jetted off with Ireland and began their Nations League tie at home to England last weekend. Last night, he came off the bench against Greece as the Boys in Green suffered their second 2-0 defeat within four days.

Despite an uninspiring break on the eye, there is reason to suggest that Idah’s goalless international break doesn’t tell the full story.

With Ireland now under the stewardship of Heimir Hallgrimsson, the Icelandic coach has his work cut out to turn around the fortunes of a side that has struggled on the international stage over the last few years.

Sitting pointless in Nations League League B Group 2, his side have scored just two goals in their last six matches, both of which came in the same match against Hungary.

Per Fotmob, Ireland amassed an Expected Goals total of just 0.65 against England, managing just 24% possession and carving out one ‘big chance’ during proceedings.

Continuing their rudderless form in front of goal, this was followed up by only 0.50 XG against Greece at the Aviva Stadium last night, the same outlet calculated.

Hallgrimsson’s side didn’t create any gilt-edged opportunities at home to a side ranked only four places above them in the FIFA World Rankings. Ultimately, they are struggling to fashion openings with regularity. It would be unfair for Idah to cop criticism when he is being starved of service.

Most are aware that Idah is still finding his feet this campaign after an uncertain pre-season. Nevertheless, you get the impression he will now kick on with Celtic in their next batch of matches.
