Willie Miller is absolutely right about Celtic’s 17-point slump, Hearts fans won’t like title race take

Willie Miller is bang on the money after the Aberdeen legend agreed Hearts are only in the title race because Celtic hired the ‘worst managers in their history’.

Miller was on commentary duty for Celtic’s win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie, as the champions leapfrogged Rangers into second place.

And now, with just ten games left to play, a conversation on BBC Radio Scotland extracted the real Celtic reason Hearts are top of the league, as Miller and match commentator Liam McLeod pointed out the Hoops’ 17-point tally swing from the same stage last season.

Will we hunt Hearts down and win the title?

Celtic’s 17-point swing that helped Hearts’ title bid

Hearts are currently top of the Scottish Premiership table, five points ahead of Celtic, and Miller agrees it’s not all down to the Tynecastle club.

McLeod said on BBC Radio Scotland, “Much kudos going Hearts’ way, and rightly so, on top of the league going into the business end of the season.

“But a big reason for that is Celtic have dropped off by 17 points on where they were after 28 games last term.

“So they’re normally in the 70s at this point, Celtic. Not always, but a normal regular season, they would be above the 70 point mark.

“Hearts, on 63, which is enough to be top of the top flight after 29 games.”

Wilfried Nancy Celtic appointment helped Hearts’ title charge

As well as the 17-point swing, the appointment of Wilfried Nancy by Celtic has also contributed to Hearts’ lead at the top of the table.

Miller continued, “Take nothing away from Hearts. That’s a fantastic season for them. But Rangers and Celtic have not been, particularly Celtic, at their best.”

McLeod: “They’ve both employed their worst managers in their history.”

Miller: “Exactly, and that’s why I say it’s really important for Hearts to take this opportunity.”

While Hearts supporters will say that it’s their own form that has helped their lead, they may well be correct, but it is undeniable that Celtic’s drop in standards has allowed the Tynecastle club to be exactly where they shouldn’t be.

It’s a Celtic truth the Hearts fans will hate.
