Desperate Rangers now turn to player who was not trusted to play against Celtic as potential manager

The Rangers managerial job is certainly piquing the interest of some Celtic supporters.

For the third year in a row, Celtic have caused the Ibrox club to dispatch their manager as they desperately try to not just overthrow the Bhoys, but struggle to keep up with them.

Celtic’s league and cup double last season meant that Rangers dispensed with Philippe Clement three months before the season officially ended.

And as Russell Martin faced the same fate as the Belgian, Rangers are now looking at a candidate who wasn’t even trusted to play against Celtic as a player.

Kevin Muscat will ‘never forgive’ Rangers snub vs Celtic

Kevin Muscat is now said to be one of the frontrunners to replace Russell Martin at Ibrox. talkSPORT say the Australian is on the shortlist as the Govan club’s desperate search for a new boss continues.

However, back in his playing days at Rangers, Muscat was dumped to the stands as Alex McLeish couldn’t trust the defender to keep his cool in the toxic environment of the Glasgow Derby.

And here, Muscat explains why he will never forgive McLeish for the Celtic snub.

Muscat told The Scottish Sun, “I’ll never forgive Alex McLeish for not playing me in an Old F-rm game — but in the nicest way possible.

“At the time I didn’t respect or understand his decision. But I’ve come to realise you have to make big decisions if you want to be a successful boss.

“I understand these are the things that managers have to do. They have to make the big calls.

“It was hard at the time, I would’ve loved to have sampled the derby.”

What now for Celtic as Rangers’ noise continues

As for Celtic, it’s business as usual for the manager as Brendan Rodgers takes his side to Dundee this Sunday.

The Hoops boss will not be concerning himself with the struggles of his Glasgow rivals and will be fully focused on just one thing, three Tayside points.

Celtic are two points behind Hearts in the league with the Edinburgh club away to Kilmarnock on Saturday night.

Any sort of slip up in Ayrshire will open the door for Rodgers and Celtic to reclaim the top spot on Sunday and that is all the Parkhead gaffer should be thinking about.
