Andy Walker responds to suggestion of Celtic signing Andy Robertson for ‘£5m’ amid title battle

Celtic have a lot of money in the coffers, but the powers that be are reluctant to spend it.

That was proven in the summer, and it’s proving to be the case during the January transfer window, as Martin O’Neill tries to push Celtic towards the title.

But could a chunk of Celtic’s money go on a certain Andy Robertson? He has an uncertain future at Liverpool.

There has been talk of Robertson possibly joining Spurs, but that has stalled, so could the champions of Scotland snap him up for £5 million?

Andy Robertson to Celtic during the January transfer window?

Celtic spending money on positions they need to strengthen in January would be a minor miracle, never mind a pretty strong spot.

Despite Kieran Tierney and Marcelo Saracchi being Celtic’s left-backs, Andy Walker was asked about Robertson joining the Hoops in January, but he dismissed the idea.

Speaking on Go Radio, Walker stated that Robertson would ‘love’ to play for his boyhood club, but Celtic have other pressing matters to deal with right now.

Walker: “In an ideal world, you stay at Liverpool, and you play. But if he isn’t going to be playing, and he hasn’t been the first choice. I totally get why he wants to play every week.”

Paul Cooney: “Andy, Celtic, do you think they could have the chops to come in and get him just now?”

Walker: “I think Andy Robertson would love to play for Celtic. Everything needs to be aligned. If Kieran Tierney wasn’t there, I think it would be a no-brainer if he wasn’t there.”

Cooney: “It’s only £5 million, apparently. For £5 million, if you get the Scotland captain. Look at the PR on it. You bring in Andy Robertson just now. You are behind Hearts. You are behind Rangers. Get it done, no?”

Walker: “If Celtic are going to spend serious money. I don’t think it’s the number one position you want to strengthen.”

Is Kieran Tierney back to his best at Celtic?

Kieran Tierney’s numbers since re-joining Celtic

It would be great if Robertson could live his dream and play for Celtic, but he is a free transfer in the summer, so there is no point getting him now.

Plus, Tierney is getting stronger and stronger. Those injuries are no longer affecting him because he has stayed away from the treatment room for over 12 months now. No long-term issues.

It’s showing in his performances because he is getting better and better.
