Barry Ferguson questions Celtic’s summer move for Andy Robertson despite free transfer

Barry Ferguson has probably provided the outside reality of Andy Robertson making a blockbuster summer move to Celtic.

Robertson has been continually linked with Celtic, and that noise is expected to be ramped up in the coming months when the Liverpool star becomes a free transfer.

While some Celtic fans dream of Robertson signing, Ferguson, looking on from the outside, has provided two reasons why it probably shouldn’t happen: Kieran Tierney and the high wages.

Speaking on Go Radio, Ferguson quickly questioned the logic of the potential deal:

“I don’t see why Celtic would go and, I know it’s a free transfer, but I would imagine the salary,” Ferguson stated.

“But you have Kieran Tierney there. I wouldn’t see the need for Celtic to bring in Andy Robertson.”

Barry Ferguson suggests Kieran Tierney is a reason why Celtic won’t sign Andy Robertson

You hate to say it, but Ferguson is absolutely right to highlight the massive financial hurdle.

Yes, Robertson is entering the final months of his Liverpool contract and will be available as a free transfer, but his expected wage demands could easily shatter the Celtic pay structure.

Furthermore, the champions of Scotland have already pulled off one masterstroke in that exact position by securing Tierney on his own sensational free transfer last summer.

However, the romantic links connecting the Scotland captain to his boyhood club simply will not go away.

Robertson is widely expected to leave Anfield this summer and was heavily linked with a lucrative switch to Tottenham Hotspur during the January window.

In hindsight, it is perhaps a blessing for Celtic fans that a Spurs move never materialised, as it keeps the door slightly ajar for a dream return to Paradise.

But even though it’s coming from a former Rangers man, perhaps Ferguson’s comments are the wisest because it is being said with no bias, and there is a lot of truth in it.

Paul Cooney: “You wonder what the decision will be on Robertson’s future. You often hear about Celtic, but it’s unlikely they will need him right now. They have Kieran Tierney.”

Ferguson: “I don’t see why Celtic would go and, I know it’s a free transfer, but I would imagine the salary. I know he has made a hell of a lot of money.

“But you have Kieran Tierney there. I wouldn’t see the need for Celtic to bring in Andy Robertson. I am sure there will be loads of Premier League teams. There will be teams all over the globe desperate to sign a player of that quality.”
