Benfica have sent out their thanks and goodbyes to Jota after he left the club permanently to sign for Scottish champions Celtic.

Jota has been on the books at Benfica for his entire footballing career, signing for their youth team at the age of eight and progressing through the ranks to eventually make senior appearances.

The winger leaving them is a big deal and they published a brilliant video on social media this morning showcasing his rise through the youth teams.

New Hibernian signing Jair Tavares, who also came through Benfica, explained that Jota became a ‘legend’ of the academy, giving an insight into how highly rated he was.

After failing to get consistent first-team chances, the Portuguese Bhoy made a loan switch to Celtic last summer and has fallen in love with the Glasgow experience, as well as working under Ange Postecoglou.

He had a brilliant debut campaign, quickly becoming a fan favourite and providing a dangerous edge to the Celtic attack even up against stodgy defences.

Jota is an entertainer, but he’ll become more and more effective with the ball too over time. His end product wasn’t lacklustre last season, but I think it will become even better this time around.

He has now found another footballing home after uncertainty at Benfica for so many years and that is only going to add to his confidence too.

Celtic is the perfect platform for him to develop further and ultimately test himself at the highest level in the UEFA Champions League group stages.

That he has committed five years to the club is fantastic and shows just how enamoured he has become with playing in the green and white hoops.

The club are showing serious ambition this summer and you get the sense Postecoglou is far from finished in the transfer market.

I am counting down the minutes to pre-season friendlies!
