Brendan Rodgers told it would ‘make sense’ for Celtic star to sign for Ronny Deila in the MLS

Ronny Deila played a key part in helping start Celtic’s dominance, before Brendan Rodgers came in and took it to a completely different level.

The 49-year-old spent two years in the Celtic Park dugout, between 2014-16, and proceeded to win two Premiership titles, as well as the League Cup, but that Rangers defeat on penalties ended his reign.

That’s when Rodgers entered the building and proceeded to take Celtic to levels fans hadn’t seen before, including the Invincible Treble.

As per with many managers who leave Celtic, sometimes you just don’t relive those highs again and that was the case with Deila.

The Norwegian has managed six clubs since donning the green and white colours, including spells in Belgium, Norway, Abu Dhabi and now in the MLS, where he is coaching, Atlanta United.

Deila has, none other than, Kenny Miller as his assistant and it was suggested that a current Celtic star could join them next season.

Greg Taylor backed to secure MLS move to Ronny Deila’s Atlanta United

Greg Taylor’s future has been well-documented for many months now and his contract is due to expire in the summer.

With Kieran Tierney returning to Celtic and Jeffrey Schlupp, on loan from Crystal Palace, now taking his starting place and no sign of a new deal being signed, then it points to the obvious that he will be leaving.

But where will Taylor go? Well, Marvin Bartley suggested that it would ‘make sense’ for him to rock up in the MLS, before Deila’s name at Atlanta United was mentioned, as he told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard.

“I think he has been really, really good for Celtic,” said Bartley. “He always seems to be one of those players that, when things go right, they are few and far between them happening at Celtic, it’s always Greg Taylor.

“For me, he has been fantastic. I know he is a brilliant professional. Off the pitch, he is unbelievable for Celtic. If I was him, pitching up over to the MLS would make sense for him.

“When he didn’t start away at Bayern Munich, that would have hit him hard. People think footballers are robots. They are not. That would have been a real difficult one for him to take, as you said, his contract is coming to an end.

“There is also this talk of Kieran Tierney. When we heard it, players would have known about that a long time before and they are international teammates, so I am sure those discussions would have happened.

“For Greg Taylor, I think he knew his time was up at Celtic and he has never kind of not tried. He is out of form. Schlupp is playing ahead of him. I think it’s the right time for him to move on, for the player and the club. I think you will see him pitch up in the MLS or somewhere abroad. Try something different.

Roger Hannah then stated: “Ronny Deila and Kenny Miller at Atlanta United,” before Bartley responded: “There you go, it has started a rumour.”

Taylor’s stats for Celtic this season

Whether it’s right or wrong, Taylor has divided opinion this season and has been a huge talking point with the Celtic fans.

Let’s be honest, it didn’t help matters that Rodgers came out and publicly had to back him because it just added fuel to the fire.

But now, with Taylor on the bench and those starting minutes dropping, this could well be his final season in Celtic colours and his performances in the Premiership have been stronger than the ones in the Champions League.
