Celtic’s strategy of selling or letting players go this summer has been pretty laughable.
Someone like Nicolas Kuhn was allowed to leave, weeks before Celtic’s Champions League exit, whilst Adam Idah was to-ing and fro-ing from Glasgow and Swansea during the final days of the window.
You have to question the method behind Celtic’s madness because it makes no sense. After all, they did the same with Hyunjun Yang on transfer deadline day.
The South Korean star was expected to join English Championship side Birmingham City in a £3 million deal, but the move collapsed at the last minute, and he didn’t join the growing list of former Celtic players in the Midlands.

Celtic hero Patrick Roberts joins Kyogo Furuhashi at Birmingham City
Early on in the summer, many would have seen Kyogo Furuhashi join Birmingham after his nightmare six months in France with Rennes.
Added to that, you also have former midfielder Tomoki Iwata at St Andrew’s, not forgetting their manager Chris Davies, who also has Celtic connections.
You can now add Hoops hero Patrick Roberts to that list because, after their failed move for Yang, they brought in the Sunderland winger on a season-long loan deal.
Birmingham’s Celtic mention after Roberts’ signing
This is another smart purchase from Birmingham, and they have shown Celtic how to do it because, after missing out on Yang, they were very quick to secure Roberts’ signature.
Some could argue that Celtic should have re-signed Roberts because he would have fitted in brilliantly on the flanks, and it would have added the quality the club needs.
Either way, when Birmingham announced Roberts’ signing, they made sure to mention the period he had at Celtic Park.
‘His talent caught the eye of Manchester City, who signed Roberts for an eight-figure fee in the summer of 2015, and despite finding opportunities hard to come by at the Etihad Stadium, the winger enjoyed a series of successful loan spells,’ wrote Birmingham on their website.
‘After helping Celtic win seven major trophies during his spell at Parkhead, Roberts also featured for Girona, Norwich City, Middlesbrough and Derby County.’
