Celtic learn Frosinone stance on Fares Ghedjemis as sporting director speaks out

Frosinone sporting director Renzo Castagnini says it’s ‘not a given’ that Fares Ghedjemis will leave the club this summer.

That’s despite Celtic and many other clubs being interested in the winger, who was the star player in their promotion from Serie B this season.

Celtic came close to signing Ghedjemis in January, but the player rejected the move after an offer was accepted.

He reportedly did this because he was focused on returning the club to the Italian top-flight, which they have now achieved.

Frosinone sporting director Renzo Castagnini: It’s not a given that Fares Ghedjemis will leave

Castagnini said of Ghedjemis, via Tuttomercatoweb: “It’s not a given that he’ll leave. We’ll evaluate the approaches and see if we get an offer that satisfies us.

“It depends entirely on the market.

“Many young players don’t even get the chance to demonstrate their talent.

“It takes courage to let them play, and here in Italy, unfortunately, there isn’t much of that. If someone is good, their ID doesn’t matter.”

Since coming close to Glasgow, the winger has gone from strength to strength. He finished the season as third top-scorer in Serie B with 15 goals, despite playing all his football from the right wing.

It appears that this hasn’t dissuaded Celtic from rekindling their interest though, with the story now set to continue.

Ghedjemis is currently preparing for the World Cup with Algeria, to whom he switched allegiances from France earlier this season.

They will compete against Argentina, Jordan and Austria in Group F at this summer’s tournament, their first World Cup appearance since 2014.

Martin O’Neill said that reports linking the Hoops with the 23-year-old as well as Damir Redzic “weren’t a million miles away”.

In the end, no deal was reached and the player remained in Italy, with the Hoops going on to sign Joel Mvuka.

Celtic’s January transfer window: a success or not?

Also added to aid the Hoops’ attack were a pair of strikers, the first of which was Tomas Cvancara on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Czech international didn’t set the world alight in Glasgow, and nor did Junior Adamu, who was unable to kick on from a goal on his debut.

Julian Araujo was the window’s biggest success, but his season was curtailed by a quad injury. Benjamin Arthur made more of an impact than expected.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain won Celtic four points by scoring two decisive games against Livingston and St Mirren.
