Celtic transfer target Armando Gonzalez has broken a 16-year record that had been held by former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Javier Hernandez.
Gonzalez is one of football’s most exciting young prospects and has caught the eye of the Hoops, as well as other European giants.
Mexico boss Javier Aguirre has tipped ‘La Hormiga’ to play in Europe one day and breaking a record set by someone as prolific as Hernandez will only strengthen those chances.
Armando Gonzalez was linked with Barcelona before Celtic 🔥
12 goals in 17 games last season. Is he is the missing piece of the puzzle?
Armando Gonzalez takes Javier Hernandez’s record with 22-goal haul
Since the 2009/10 season, no Chivas player has scored more goals than ‘Chicarito’ (21) in a single season.
However, Gonzalez is now the outright record holder after the forward scored in Chivas’ 3-2 win against Monterrey.
That takes the 22-year-old’s total to 22 and he is on course to become the first player to win back-to-back golden boots in the division.
To make things more impressive, both players managed to reach the 21-goal mark in the same amount of appearances (28) before the new holder struck on 21 March 2026 to write himself into the record books.
Armando Gonzalez has scored more goals than Lamine Yamal this season
Celtic’s chances of landing a player as talented as Gonzalez every day, even if he does look like the perfect striker to take the Hoops to the next level.
His valuation will only increase as well when people realise that he is the highest scoring player aged 23 or under in the world right now.
| Player | Club | Age | Goals | Games |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Armando Gonzalez | Chivas | 22 | 22 | 29 |
| Lamine Yamal | Barcelona | 18 | 20 | 38 |
| Igor Thiago | Brentford | 24* (started the season) | 19 | 30 |
| Joaquin Panichelli | Strasbourg | 22 | 14 | 26 |
| Benjamin Sesko | Man United | 22 | 13 | 26 |
Lamine Yamal is second on the list with 20 goals in 38 games, meaning he has two less than ‘La Hormiga’ despite playing 10 more games than him.
If he is to come to Glasgow, he would almost certainly have to be Celtic’s record signing.
