Celtic appear to be making the correct decision by rejecting the chance to sign Tomas Cvancara permanently this summer.
Cvancara arrived with physical presence and strong pedigree from Borussia Mönchengladbach, but the reality in Glasgow was underwhelming despite starting eight out of his 13 appearances for Celtic.
The reported €8m option was always difficult to justify and the striker’s loan spell never produced enough evidence at Celtic to support that level of investment.
Should Celtic bring Tomas Cvancara back next season?
The on-loan striker's season is now over after injury…
Celtic never saw enough from Cvancara
For all the expectation surrounding the move, Cvancara managed only two goals during his time at Celtic.
That return simply does not match the financial commitment required to make the transfer permanent. Celtic need forwards who can make an immediate and consistent impact across domestic and European competition.
Cvancara showed flashes of quality at Celtic, but flashes are not enough when a club is being asked to commit major money.
Celtic cannot ignore Cvancara’s injury concern
The striker’s Celtic campaign was also curtailed by injury in April, which removed any final opportunity to change opinions before the season ended.
That only increased the risk attached to the deal. Spending €8m on a player who struggled for continuity would have been difficult to defend, especially when Celtic are expected to strengthen multiple areas this summer.
Walking away may disappoint some supporters who hoped Cvancara would eventually settle, but Celtic have to be ruthless with decisions of this size.
Nothing from the loan spell suggested this was a deal the club could not afford to miss.
