Celtic and Lanus will continue to work on a potential deal for Alexandro Bernabei, journalist Mark Hendry has reported on social media tonight.

Hendry was the Football Scotland reporter who broke the initial news of Celtic’s interest in Bernabei a few days ago, suggesting the club were well down the road regarding his signature.

It was then reported on the Argentinian side that Celtic had an initial offer rejected for the left-back.

Providing an update on Twitter tonight, Hendry has backed that assessment up, believing the hierarchies of both clubs are willing to work on a deal despite the initial rejection.

Celtic are in the market for a new defender to compete with Greg Taylor on the left flank and have been linked with a number of South Americans including Francisco Ortega and Julian Aude.

However, the interest in Bernabei is the most firmly reported on at this point. If Celtic are making offers, it suggests the scouting department and the manager have determined he is the man they want.

He’s made 84 senior appearances in total for Lanus, scoring four times and assisting on ten occasions.

The player hasn’t featured for his club in recent days with reports indicating he is in Europe on personal business. However, it’s unclear whether or not this is related to Celtic.

I’d suggest, at this stage, that it isn’t if the clubs haven’t yet agreed on any terms. He could well be paving the way for featuring in European football in terms of visas and other behind-the-scenes things.

This is definitely a situation we’ll be watching closely over the next few days, with the Jota deal still in the pipeline too.
