Celtic have been told that Feyenoord will negotiate with teams interested in signing winger Calvin Stengs.
The Hoops have made an enquiry over Stengs, according to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph, as they seek two new wingers before the transfer window shuts.
It was said that any Celtic bid for the Dutchman would hinge on whether the Bhoys progress past Kairat Almaty and into the league phase of the Champions League.
Moreover, Joseph claimed Stengs would cost a lot in terms of the transfer fee and his wages – but that may not be strictly true.
Stengs may cost Celtic less than market value
That’s because Dutch publication Rijnmond state that Celtic may be able to sign Stengs for a little bit less than what Feyenoord value him at.
Stengs is one of the club’s top earners, so it’s true that the Hoops will need to offer a substantial wage packet for the 26-year-old.
But that’s precisely why Feyenoord may be willing to sell him on a reduced rate, simply to get him off their wage bill.
Journalist Dennis van Eersel said: “Feyenoord will definitely cooperate on a transfer. He’s one of the top earners in the squad. That could influence the transfer fee in negotiations.”
Rijnmond then claimed: “Feyenoord will be willing to settle for a bit less if it also means they can get rid of his multi-million dollar salary.”
Stengs medical ‘shouldn’t be a problem’
Stengs missed some games for Feyenoord due to injury last season, but has stressed himself that injury problems for him are rare.
He failed a medical with Charlotte FC last year, but sources reportedly close to Stengs say that won’t be an issue this time around if he is to move over the next week or so.
Stengs said: “I think I’ve been fit for seven years. A little more (unfit) last season, but people forget that I played seven years straight. It’s being exaggerated.”
