Celtic told the board feels they have ‘overpaid’ for trio brought in by Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers has less than 12 months remaining on his Celtic contract.

As things stand, the 2025/26 season will be Rodgers’ final season at Celtic, and the board, alongside the fans, want him to stay beyond June 2026 and help continue the dominance.

One way to urge Rodgers to put pen to paper is by Celtic going in and making some serious moves in the 2025 summer transfer market.

But it has been pretty clear that it hasn’t happened yet, and one of the reasons could be behind how much the Celtic manager has already spent on players in his second spell in charge.

Celtic have ‘overpaid’ for Arne Engels, Adam Idah, and Auston Trusty

Arne Engels is Celtic’s club-record signing at £11 million, whilst Adam Idah joined permanently last summer for £9 million from Norwich City after his successful loan spell, and Auston Trusty was purchased for £6 million from Sheffield United.

Ross McCormack thinks the Celtic board will be telling Rodgers that they have ‘overpaid’ for the above trio and also been ‘held to ransom a little bit.’

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, one thing is certain on McCormack’s mind, and how they have ‘definitely’ paid over the mark for Idah.

On Celtic not needing the Champions League money to sign players: “But the board might be looking at it, if you go back to last summer’s transfer window, they have paid £9 million for Idah, £11 million for Engels, £6 million for Trusty,” stated McCormack.

“They might actually be looking at it, now and thinking, ‘we might have overpaid slightly and been held to ransom a little bit.’

“I think, for me, personally, they definitely did with Adam Idah. They had to buy him after he scored the winner in the Scottish Cup final.”

Celtic will have up to ‘five’ new players in the building before the September deadline

There is still a month left of this window, and you wonder if there might be some late, late action from Celtic.

Whilst some supporters are worried, McCormack thinks ‘significant quality’ will still come into the building, and he can still see ‘five’ more players being signed by September 1.

“Listen, it’s a waiting game,” added McCormack. “There is no doubt at all that Celtic will have three, four or five players in before this window, and they will be of significant quality as well.”
