It’s now about playing the waiting game regarding Kyogo Furuhashi’s future at Celtic.
Days after Celtic’s win over Young Boys in the Champions League, which also confirmed their play-off place, not many would have expected this current situation.
Kyogo is nearing his Celtic exit – he started in midweek – and he is expected to secure a transfer to French side, Rennes.
It has been a huge talking point in Glasgow, with many questions being asked about the Japan star, who was signed by Ange Postecoglou in 2021.
After winning the double last season upon Brendan Rodgers’ return and the champions signing Adam Idah for big money.
Kyogo has remained the main man up top and Celtic are granting his wish, even though it’s midway through the season and knockout football in Europe returns after 13 years.
But Andy Walker says there is one condition that would have kept the 30-year-old at the club.
Celtic told Kyogo Furuhashi wouldn’t have been allowed to leave if Rangers gap was smaller
Celtic are bossing proceedings on the Premiership stage and heading towards another league title, and the possible Treble.
Unfortunately, Kyogo is going to miss all of that if this Rennes move goes through, as Walker thinks he wouldn’t be allowed to leave if Rangers were closer in the table.
The Hoops are 13 points clear at the top of the table and they have a ‘big enough cushion’, as Walker alluded to on Go Radio.

“Just extraordinary,” said Walker. “Just on Kyogo, I think it’s a deal that probably suits both parties, according to Brendan Rodgers, he is someone who wanted to move.
“But, I think for Celtic, as a club, to get that type of money for a 30-year-old, who has given you so much good service. I don’t think any business would have been done had the league title, let’s say Rangers were two points behind Celtic. I don’t think they would have done business then.
“But I think they know that they certainly have a big enough cushion to get the title over the line.”
How many trophies has Kyogo won at Celtic?
Huge credit to Postecoglou for bringing in a player like Kyogo because that unknown figure has turned into a gem and a club legend.
In total, he scored 85 goals in Celtic colours – it’s a shame it won’t be 100 because he deserved it – including striking eight times against Rangers.
And, with all of that, has come the reward of trophy after trophy, with eight in total so far, but it will be nine when the league title is confirmed.
