Celtic summer transfer target Louis Munteanu has opened up on his failed attempt to leave CFR Cluj this summer.

Munteanu went AWOL and refused to play for the Romanian side after informing them that he wanted to leave.

The forward was of interest to the likes of Valencia and Rennes; however, Cluj slapped a huge asking price on the 23-year-old’s head.

Cluj are now willing to negotiate a lower fee for Munteanu, and for the first time since the saga, the player himself has broken his cover.

How Louis Munteanu feels now after failed transfer

The Hoops made a £6.9m bid for the forward, which was swiftly rejected earlier in the window.

Now in October, Munteanu recently scored his first league goal and insists that all he is focused on is playing football.

“As I said in the last match against Hermannstadt, I got back on my feet,” he told AS.

“I feel better and better and it’s clear on the field that I look good.

“It hasn’t been an easy summer, I’m trying to focus on CFR and the national team, I’m trying to find my rhythm.”

Do Celtic still need Louis Munteanu?

The fact that Munteanu will be available on the cheap could tempt the Hoops, but is he really needed?

Kelechi Iheanacho has started life at Parkhead brightly, but his backups Johnny Kenny, Callum Osmand and Shin Yamada are all nowhere to be seen.

If Iheanacho were to pick up an injury, one of the current three would be under consideration; however, Brendan Rodgers seems to trust Daizen Maeda down the middle more than any of the natural options.

There are cases to be made, for and against, but it will all depend on where Celtic are when January rolls around.
