It has been well-documented that Daizen Maeda wanted to leave Celtic last summer.
Many felt that it played a key role in Maeda’s form dropping off for large parts of this campaign, before he turned into a goalscoring machine for the post-split fixtures.
But amid the noise of Maeda wanting to leave, when Martin O’Neill returned to Celtic for a second time in January, he inadvertently revealed that the Japan star could have joined Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
Fast forward to the present, and Maeda has won the double at Celtic, while Wolfsburg have been relegated from the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg relegated from the Bundesliga after 29 years
Just like in Scotland, the German system also deploys a relegation play-off, which Wolfsburg were a part of, playing SC Paderborn 07 over two legs.
After a goalless draw in the first leg, which was played at the Volkswagen Arena, Wolfsburg then travelled into enemy territory on Monday.
Despite taking an early lead, the away side had a man sent off inside 15 minutes, before Paderborn would bang the door down and secure the victory.
For the first time in the Bundesliga’s 29-year history, Wolfsburg are down, and Maeda should count his lucky stars, because that could have been him.

Feels right for Daizen Maeda to leave Celtic this summer
Maeda wants to play in the Premier League. He recently expressed that desire, and you just wonder if Celtic will grant him that wish if a team comes knocking this summer.
One thing is for sure: staying at Celtic and avoiding the mess at Wolfsburg has been career-saving for the all-action forward.
From financial difficulties to on-field problems, it has all been going wrong for Wolfsburg, and you just wonder how much of an impact Maeda would have made had he joined them.
Those dreams of wanting to play in England’s top-flight would have faded away because Maeda would have been heading down to Germany’s second-tier.
Instead, the man signed by Ange Postecoglou has become an even bigger Celtic legend and boosted his reputation by staying put in Glasgow.
