Championship club ‘show interest’ in reuniting Kyogo Furuhashi with ex-Celtic teammate

Kyogo Furuhashi doesn’t look likely to come back to Celtic this month.

But his disappointing run of form at Birmingham has led them to chuck £6 million at Djugardens striker August Priske, potentially putting Kyogo even further down the pecking order.

As he looks to make one last push to make Japan’s squad at this summer’s World Cup, playing time will be essential for the Celtic hero.

And that could be on the cards at another Championship club, where ironically, he’d be taking the place of one of his ex-Celtic teammates.

Adam Idah will be unavailable for Swansea until March, and according to WalesOnline, they have identified Kyogo to replace him.

Idah’s £7 million move to Swansea in the summer was a contributing factor to the eventual resignation of Brendan Rodgers.

The Ireland striker wasn’t replaced before the transfer deadline. The move itself is yet to work out for Idah, too – he has largely been benched for the in-form one-time Celtic target Zan Vipotnik.

Kyogo marked his 31st birthday at the beginning of this week with his first Championship goal for Birmingham.

He has endured a nightmare year since leaving Glasgow, being banished from the team at Rennes before racking up the missed chances at St Andrews.

Ex-Celtic targets Manuel Benson and Zeidane Innousa are also on the books at Swansea – however, they face an uphill battle to get Kyogo in the door.

That’s because of his wage demands, which are reportedly far beyond what the Swans would be willing to pay.

He still has two-and-a-half years left on his deal at Birmingham, where manager Chris Davies insists that he remains in their plans.

But with Priske, Kyogo and fellow big-money strikers, Jay Stansfeld and Marvin Duksch on their books, it feels like something has to give before the end of the window.

Asked about Kyogo a fortnight ago, interim Hoops boss revealed why he was ‘unlikely’ to make his Parkhead return.

He said: “I would’ve said that would probably be unlikely. It would be unlikely.

“I think everything’s premature. There’s a viewpoint that he wants to prove himself at Birmingham.

“We’re doing plenty of work on [transfer business], seriously. I know that’s a big generalisation, but we are doing that there.

“Hopefully we’ll try and get a few players in. But yeah, there’s a lot of work going on at the moment, and I do think that we’re well aware that we have to supplement the squad.”
