Shakhtar Donetsk have announced the signing of former Celtic winger Marian Shved, who returns to his homeland from Belgian club Mechelen.

Shved was a fairly hyped arrival to Celtic from Ukraine back in 2019 but failed to make an impact under Neil Lennon and subsequently spent time on loan in Belgium before signing permanently for Mechelen.

He has now signed a five-year contract with Shakhtar and could face the Bhoys in the upcoming UEFA Champions League group stage.

It will inevitably bring up that old worry of the player coming back to bite us on the biggest stage but, in truth, most fans won’t regard Shved as someone to be too concerned about based on what we’ve seen.

He only ever made three substitute appearances for the Bhoys and he’s hardly been prolific since his exit.

In Shved’s favour, his form in Ukrainian football was electric before we signed him, so he’ll be hoping he can get back to his best days and make an impact.

Celtic play Shakhtar in Poland 14th September before hosting them in Glasgow more than a month later on 25th October.

The Bhoys are making late transfer window signings of their own with Sead Haksabanovic arriving and making his debut in last night’s win over Ross County.

Meanwhile, there are credible reports that a move for Oliver Abildgaard is imminent today.
