Ex-Roma star tells Evan Ferguson he could be a ‘better fit’ at Celtic

Celtic are in desperate need of a striker this winter.

Wilfried Nancy’s team have created plenty of chances in recent weeks, but their finishing has left a fair bit to be desired.

Johnny Kenny has come in for some criticism, but to be fair to the Irish striker, he frankly shouldn’t be carrying the responsibility that he is.

What we are witnessing is a symptom of a disastrous summer transfer window which led to a wave of Celtic fan protests.

One player to haunt Celtic this season has been Evan Ferguson after some tipped him to join the Hoops. Would he really consider it?

John Arne Riise on Evan Ferguson joining Celtic

Celtic have been tracking Ferguson amid his struggles on loan in the Italian capital.

Since joining on loan from Brighton, the Europa League tie in Glasgow is one of just two games that the Ireland star has scored in.

This has led to talk of him being sent back to the Seagulls next month, with Roma close to signing Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee in his place.

And according to former Roma and Liverpool star John Arne Riise, the Hoops could be a ‘better fit’ for the 21-year-old.

Riise said, via the Irish Mirror: “Italian football is also difficult to adapt to, I think it’s better for him to look somewhere else to get back his feeling.

“But then again, he stepped up and scored two goals in the Europa League, that might be what he needed to get back his confidence and the belief from the supporters and the club to believe in him because, don’t get me wrong, he’s a good player.

“His style of play is more like Premier League, Championship, Scottish football, but now he’s scored two goals and hopefully that will push him on.

“Could he end up at Celtic? Never say never. He’s a player who fits better in those kind of clubs, to be fair.”

Would you take Evan Ferguson at Celtic in January?

Evan Ferguson’s career until now

Ferguson made his first friendly appearance for Bohemians’ senior team aged just 14, and joined Brighton at 16, making his debut six months later.

An early developer physically, he eventually started getting minutes in the Premier League as a teenager. Along with Cesc Fabregas, he is one of the only two non-English players to get ten goal involvements in the division before the age of 18.

At his peak level of hype, interest from Chelsea and Manchester United was reportedly fended off by a £100 million price tag set by Brighton.

But a few years on, that feels a long, long way away.
