Celtic love a project signing, but so do Chelsea in the English Premier League.

In recent years, Chelsea, under new American ownership following Roman Abramovich’s abrupt exit, have decided to take a different path in the transfer market.

Just like the champions of Scotland, they are investing a significant amount of money in young players, and now they are bringing in their latest talent.

It’s not exactly £100 million on Moises Caicedo or Enzo Fernandez, but it’s a player Celtic were looking at during the 2025 summer transfer market.

Celtic transfer target Jesse Derry to join Chelsea

Celtic have been looking at Derry, with the highly-rated Crystal Palace star rejecting a new contract at Selhurst Park.

But a move to Scotland isn’t on the cards for the ‘teenage sensation’, who is set to join Chelsea, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer expert has claimed on social media that Chelsea, who won the recent FIFA Club World Cup, have beaten ‘eight European clubs’ to Derry’s signature.

‘Chelsea agree deal to sign 18-year-old winger Jesse Derry from Crystal Palace, beating 8 European clubs for the England winger,’ wrote Romano.

‘Medical will take place on Friday as the teenage sensation looked set for a move to Germany before Chelsea hijacked the move.’

What has Brendan Rodgers said about transfers?

On Thursday evening, Celtic were thrashed by Ajax in the Como Cup in Italy, which puts a sour taste in fans’ mouths ahead of the new season.

Yes, over the weekend, Celtic put four goals past Newcastle, but this latest performance and result hasn’t gone down well with the supporters.

Brendan Rodgers himself wants the powers that be at Celtic Park to be ‘ambitious’ in the transfer market, as he told the Daily Record.

“Yes, it depends what your ambition is,” stated Rodgers. “If your ambition is to really progress and push forward, then we need to improve the squad.”
