Former Celtic star Jeremie Frimpong is one of the names on the summer transfer radar of Real Madrid, it has been reported in Spain this week.

Frimpong has been a stand-out performer for Bayer Leverkusen since leaving the Bhoys and it’s attracting attention across Europe. Now, it is Madrid who are taking serious notice.

OK Diario reports that Frimpong is a candidate to provide competition and cover for superstar Dani Carvajal next season, with Madrid said to very much be in the market for an attacking right-back.

Celtic hold sell-on clause on Frimpong transfer

It seems that Frimpong may well have his pick of top clubs this summer if he decides it is time to leave Leverkusen with Manchester United also said to be keen on his services. His current contract doesn’t expire until 2025 meaning the Bundesliga outfit are in a strong negotiating position.

Interestingly, it has been widely reported that Celtic hold a significant sell-on percentage of the profit of his transfer to Germany in January 2021. With some many big clubs apparently vying for his signature, it increasingly looks like the Bhoys could bank a decent amount of money from his sale.

Any cash earned from a Frimpong move would undoubtedly be a bonus for the Bhoys, but there’s a long way to go on all this yet.

We’ve been here before. Remember Moussa Dembele’s much-touted big-money exit from Lyon? That never materialised and no sell-on fee has found its way to Celtic.

It’s not something the club will be banking on when it comes to Frimpong either. The transfer market is notoriously volatile and there’s never a guarantee that a club goes on to spend tens of millions on a single player despite a high volume of reports indicating it’s on the cards.

The 22-year-old has played 43 times for his club his season, scoring an impressive nine goals and assisting ten more.
