Former Celtic defender, Efe Ambrose has signed for Queen of the South in a short-term deal that will last until the end of this year. Ambrose was available on a free transfer after his contract at Greenock Morton expired at the end of last season.

67 Hail Hail told last week how the former Hoops defender was on trial with Paul Hartley at Cove Rangers but it seems that the club didn’t seek to take that move forward.

Ambrose was delighted at the chance to return to football and said he is looking forward to doing what he can to help the League One side in the coming season.

In a statement on the club’s official website, Ambrose said, “I’m happy to be joining Marvin at Queens and to get back amongst a squad. When I got the call, I jumped at the chance to sign.

“I’m looking forward to joining the rest of the boys and hopefully my experience and knowledge will add value to the team.”

New manager, Marvin Bartley was delighted to sign the former Hoops defender and said his experience will be vital in a dressing room that is ultimately made up of youngsters.

Bartley said, “With the injuries and suspensions we have just now we needed to add to the squad and I’m grateful Efe has joined on a short deal.

“He is someone I have known for a long time so I know what he brings and what we will get. We have a lot of talented young players, but we are currently short of senior heads. Efe will give us that experience. He is also a great character to have around the dressing room.”

Ambrose was a cult hero amongst the Celtic fans and the feeling was mutual by the player. The Nigerian defender spent a successful five seasons at the club where he picked up four league titles, a Scottish Cup and a League Cup.

After he left Paradise, he spent two seasons at Hibs and then spent time at Livingston, St Johnstone, Dunfermline and, finally Greenock Morton. The 34-year-old defender will be hoping to impress at his new club and we all wish him well for the new season ahead.
