Frank McAvennie backs ‘great signing’ to join Celtic and replace Kyogo Furuhashi

The goals continued to roll in for Celtic after Kyogo Furuhashi’s exit during the January transfer window.

Yes, Celtic missed out on the Treble, but the team overall fared pretty well, despite the surprise exit of Kyogo midway through the campaign.

It irked a few Celtic supporters at the time that the club didn’t back Brendan Rodgers and bring in a replacement during the same window.

That frustration was understandable, but the key was to remain calm and not make a rash signing, just for the sake of bringing someone in.

But now, with the summer transfer window set to re-open, it’s pretty clear that one of the main targets for the club is to bring in that striker.

And Frank McAvennie has made it clear who he wants in the building.

Danny Ings has been backed to be a ‘great signing’ for Celtic

Danny Ings has left West Ham United following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Premier League season, and by the end of June, he will become a free agent.

McAvennie feels that Ings would be a ‘great signing’ for the champions of Scotland, as he noted how the club are yet to replace Kyogo.

Speaking to the Let Me Be Frank Podcast, the former Celtic and West Ham man also explained the situations of Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah, if Ings were to sign.

Host asks: “Danny Ings, that’s a name you know well. He has been linked with Celtic. Would he be a good signing?”

McAvennie then responded: “I think he would be a great signing for Celtic. We never replaced Kyogo. They haven’t replaced him.

“Adam Idah is learning. I think he is going to be a wonderful player. Not near the finished article yet. But he is a great player. Looks like an honest boy.

“I think so (there is a future for Idah at Celtic). See if you sign someone like Danny Ings. Danny won’t play every game, which will mean Adam will come in.

“And I don’t want to play Maeda through the middle. I think he is better on the wing, although he scores a lot of goals. I think he is better out there. He terrifies people.

“Danny Ings would come in and play, even if he played an hour. Get Adam on, that’s the way it’s going to be.”

Ings’ record at his last two clubs doesn’t make for great reading

The issue with Ings would be the fact that he hasn’t been producing goals in recent seasons, and has warmed the bench more than he has picked the ball up from the back of the net.

When Ings was at Aston Villa, he played second fiddle to Ollie Watkins, including struggling under Steven Gerrard, before being sold during the January transfer window of 2023 when Unai Emery was in charge.

And, for the majority of his time at the London Stadium, he has been a substitute, and even at times, not coming off the bench, whether that’s under David Moyes, Julen Lopetegui or Graham Potter.
