Frank McAvennie says Celtic have signed a ‘world-class’ star, who is ‘one of the best in the world’

Celtic’s summer transfer window is up and running.

Brendan Rodgers’ contract expires during the summer of 2026, so it will be interesting to see how the club backs him in the 2025 summer transfer market, especially given that he might not be here in the long term.

Following the Irishman’s return for his second spell in charge, he has won four trophies in Celtic colours, as well as making improvements in the Champions League.

But to reach even higher heights on Europe’s biggest stage, you need some serious quality all over the pitch.

And Frank McAvennie thinks Celtic have somebody in their building who nobody can now match anywhere in the world.

Kieran Tierney is ‘one of the best left-backs in the world’ after Celtic return

Celtic fans finally saw Kieran Tierney in his boyhood colours, after his return was confirmed this week, ahead of his contract at Arsenal expiring at the end of June.

McAvennie has labelled the Scotsman as ‘world-class’, and says he doesn’t know anyone else in the world who is a better left-back than him.

Speaking on his Let Me Be Frank Podcast, McAvennie says he is ‘delighted’ Tierney has signed for Celtic, as it also proves how much the club means to him.

“Brilliant,” responded McAvennie on Tierney’s return. “Celtic wouldn’t have had the money, that’s for sure (if Celtic had to pay for Tierney).

“He has just shown how much of a Celtic guy he is. I just don’t understand English football now. I think he is one of the best left-backs in the world, but Arteta doesn’t seem to want a left-back. He wants a left winger or wing-back.

“But that’s not KT – I just think he is a magnificent signing. I was so delighted that he put his pen to paper a few months ago, and now it’s all the photos are out there, and it’s great to have him back.

“We are getting a world-class player. There can’t be anyone out there who has doubts about Kieran Tierney. It’s embarrassing if they have – I don’t see anyone who is better at left-back than Kieran Tierney. I really don’t.”

Tierney could have gone ‘anywhere’

Tierney was loaned out to Real Sociedad last season – when they were in the Champions League – and then returned to Arsenal for this campaign.

Whilst Tierney has returned home, McAvennie feels the all-action left-back could have gone to a team higher than ‘mid-table’ in England, Spain or Italy.

“He could have gone to one of the best teams,” added McAvennie.

“Honestly, Spanish. Italian. He could have gone anywhere. There is no way that he hasn’t had any offers from England. I just think he wants to come home.”
