Kristoffer Ajer gets a fair hearing from Celtic fans despite brutal honesty
Many Celtic supporters are refusing to blame Kristoffer Ajer despite his admission he wants to leave the club this summer.
As we discussed earlier, the Norwegian defender has confirmed to the media in his homeland that he’s looking for a Celtic exit.
His ambition is to play in a top-five European league. In recent weeks he’s been linked with moves to Newcastle United, Norwich City and Bayer Leverkusen.
No doubt other clubs will be interested too.
He’s been a tremendous player over the years. The 23-year-old definitely has his critics but, for me, he’s easily one of our best players.
However, if he wants to go, we can’t stand in his way again. Ajer has already revealed he wanted to go last summer.
Kristoffer Ajer will be hard to replace at Celtic
We’ll have a tough job replacing him. If he ends up leaving before summer qualifiers, I don’t have massive amounts of faith in the fit and available options already at the club.
It’s all just another sign that there’s a lack of discipline and clarity at Celtic right now. If Ajer was still installed under a proper manager, would have gone so public with his exit plea? It’s not as if he particularly craves attention or the limelight.
Perhaps surprisingly, plenty of supporters have backed him on social media today. Sure, there are those who don’t rate him that highly, and others upset he has spoken to the media.
However, looking at the responses to the initial tweet, plenty are happy to wish him well and send him on his way.
Here’s some of the discussion happening on Twitter today…
A player that has grown massively in his time here. There’s no sour grapes from me if he wants to go. https://t.co/UR4AUPE4Pa

No surprise to read this at all. We all knew he was away this year. He didn’t rock the boat last summer and is one of the few players who had a decent season for us. Hope he goes to a top club, he’s made for it. He’d be wasted at a mid-table/relegation side. https://t.co/9f1xcFcWUi

I’d 100% have kept him. But if he wants to leave then it’s best for all that we sell him. Anyone that wants to go should go. https://t.co/fOalXmGMoK

You’ll never hear a bad word from me with regards to Kristoffer Ajer.
He deserves a fresh start somewhere else and can look back at his efforts with his head held high. The criticism from some is unwarranted.
One of the only players to stand up and be counted last season. https://t.co/rUd1wgmVNf

I like honest players. He’s telling everyone what he wants. Let’s just sell him and thank him for his time with us and wish him well for the future. https://t.co/vEXBcWXCWt

Will let him go with my best of wishes for the future, one of the few that seemed to at least try last season. Although, for crying out loud, don’t go to Newcastle… aim higher big man! https://t.co/Q2GNHx93pS

Gave us good service and hit one of the most historic kicks in the clubs history. Will be fondly remembered by all bar the nutcases who take every player moving on as a personal insult. https://t.co/Hxh0liqE96
