Celtic’s goalkeeping situation has made for an interesting debate in recent times.
Kasper Schmeichel, who played for Leeds United in his younger years, is Celtic’s number one, but his performances have been iffy since the second half of last season.
That’s why there were suggestions that Celtic are interested in Illan Meslier from Leeds United, as Daniel Farke has completely ousted a man who was once his regular number one.
Not only has Meslier not made a single appearance for the Yorkshire club this season, following their promotion to the Premier League.
But the Frenchman has only appeared on the bench five times, and now his Leeds misery could come to a crashing, brutal, but expected end in January.

Should Celtic prioritise replacing Kasper Schmeichel in the transfer window?

Leeds United could terminate Illan Meslier’s contract as Celtic show interest
It was previously reported by TeamTalk that some ‘very big clubs’ are keen on Meslier’s services, including Celtic and Inter.
Perhaps Celtic’s life could be made easier if the 25-year-old becomes a free agent during the January transfer window.
Meslier’s contract at Elland Road expires in the summer, but it’s now been reported by Beren Cross in The Athletic that Leeds are willing to buy out the remaining months of their former number one’s contract, so he can leave the club on a free in the winter.
Some Celtic fans want Schmeichel to be dropped, with Viljami Sinisalo starting the Hoops’ win over Livingston on Saturday because the Dane was nursing an injury, but could and should it become a permanent thing?
You have £20m to spend in the January transfer window. How are you spending it?
Meslier’s record at Leeds United
Remember, this is a man who made over 200 appearances for Leeds, including playing games in the Premier League.
There was a lot of hype, noise and expectation around Meslier’s talents when he was making his way up.
But he has proven to be error-prone to the point that Farke dropped him midway through Leeds’ promotion campaign last term, and he hasn’t been seen again.
This is how Meslier’s record stacks up in a Leeds shirt:
- Games: 215
- Goals conceded: 285
- Clean Sheets: 72
