What Celtic think of Leeds United’s Illan Meslier amid ‘criticism’ of Kasper Schmeichel

There could be a major change between Celtic’s sticks next summer.

Kasper Schmeichel is out-of-contract next June, and Celtic have a call to make regarding who will be their long-term goalkeeper.

At the age of 39, it’s unlikely that it will be Schmeichel, but despite Viljami Sinisalo being Celtic’s back-up keeper, it seems as though the Hoops are looking towards the English Premier League for a replacement.

Leeds United’s benched keeper, Illan Meslier, has popped up on Celtic’s transfer radar.

Celtic linked with Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier

Meslier was dropped to the bench by Daniel Farke last season, as Leeds pushed for promotion to the Premier League, because he was making far too many mistakes.

Since then, the 25-year-old has watched on from the sidelines, and he is yet to make an appearance this season.

TeamTalk are reporting that some ‘very big clubs’ are keen on Meslier’s services, including Inter and Celtic.

It has been suggested that the champions of Scotland ‘remain keen’ on signing the Frenchman ahead of the 2026 summer transfer window.

Even though Sinisalo has done well whenever he has been handed a chance by Celtic, the report suggests that it’s Meslier who is seen as a possible ‘long-term replacement’ for Schmeichel.

It has also been noted how Celtic’s number one goalkeeper has come under ‘criticism’ this season amid the club’s abject campaign, including losing three on the bounce under new boss, Wilfried Nancy.
