Martin O’Neill is reportedly keen on Motherwell forward Tawanda Maswanhise ahead of the summer.

After finishing as the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership, the 23-year-old has interest from Scotland and beyond this summer.

In January, O’Neill and Mark Fotheringham attended Motherwell’s win over Ross County, with Maswanhise widely interpreted as the subject of the visit.

The Steelmen ruled him as not for sale in that window, but the door is much more likely to be open in the coming months.

Celtic and Anderlecht in race for Tawanda Maswanhise

According to Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports, O’Neill is keen on the forward, and Anderlecht are also interested.

The Hoops have made no approach for the winger yet.

Anderlecht came close to signing Maswanhise in January, but the plug was pulled on the deal at the very last minute.

They accelerated their push for a winger after Nilson Angulo, who had interest from Celtic last summer, completed a £17.5 million move to Sunderland.

Primarily a left-winger prior to this season, Maswanhise has played across the front three under Jens Berthel Aksou over the last 12 months.

He spent most of this season as a striker, hence his exceptional goal record. He was moved back out wide for the last six games of the season, scoring no goals.

‘Well goalkeeper Calum Ward and midfielders Elliot Watt and Elijah Just are all reportedly of interest to the Hoops along with Maswanhise.

Tawanda Maswanhise’s Champions League dream

Speaking to the media in February, Maswanhise admitted that he has ambitions beyond Lanarkshire.

He said: “For me, myself and my career, I do want to play Champions League football.

“These big European competitions, that’s where I really want to strive to and make my name. That comes with time. It comes with experience.

“You never know where the bar is in football. Before I came to Motherwell, I always said I wanted to showcase my talent and really see if I can crack on.”
