Celtic are back in for Liverpool defender Ben Davies, according to the Daily Mail’s Stephen McGowan.

In today’s Scottish Daily Mail [print edition, 09/07, page 88], reputable reporter McGowan stated that Davies had become unsettled with life in Liverpool.

The former Preston North End defender looked certain to sign for Celtic. An unlikely bid from Liverpool changed the course of Davies’ career, however, and it was an offer he couldn’t turn down.

But perhaps he should’ve; Davies hasn’t actually played a minute for Liverpool yet [Transfermarkt].

The report states that Celtic will need to fend off interest from a list of English clubs. Most notably Bournemouth, who are missing the talents of Cameron Carter-Vickers, another player who’s been strongly linked with Celtic.

A new dawn beckons for Celtic in Europe, as Joe Hart shows his class once again

With Celtic needing to strengthen in key positions, the chase for defensive cover has been very public, but also encouraging. Alongside Carter-Vickers, Carl Starfelt of Rubin Kazan and Mario Vuskovic have been tipped to join the Bhoys.

The Bhoys are likely to lose Kristoffer Ajer this summer. In addition, Christopher Jullien is still missing through injury, while Shane Duffy has long since left the club. Stephen Welsh has impressed since breaking into the team, and there are youngsters like Dane Murray and Leo Hjelde who could make the step up in 21-22.

Unplayed for Liverpool, Ben Davies would be joining more attractive Celtic this time round

Given how close Davies was to joining Celtic in January, it’s fair to say it’s a different Celtic he’d be mulling over now.

The manager has changed, the style has changed, and the atmosphere around Celtic is far more positive. If, indeed, he was all but joining until Liverpool stepped in, the club are surely more attractive now than they were in the winter.

That bodes well for any Celtic interest. However, the report states that clubs including the Hoops are looking to secure Davies on a year-long loan. That might not go down too well with supporters, after mixed results with temporary deals last season.

However, we need numbers. Celtic desperately need some defensive cover through the door as we look to win back our title. With supporters desperate for the club to battle across multiple fronts, including a strong showing in Europe, a loan deal for a player we were largely already sold on seems like good business.

With FC Midtjylland to play in just 11 days, Ange Postecoglou will be aware of the limitations in his current squad. Davies may well be an important fix.
