Celtic are actively and currently monitoring the progress of Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull after he came close to joining the club last summer, The Scottish Sun has reported this week.

The paper say that Bhoys coach Gavin Strachan was in attendance to watch the player during Saturday’s match against Hibernian at Easter Road.

Although he didn’t inspire his side to a Scottish Premiership victory, Turnbull won plaudits from 67 Hail Hail writer David Walton, as well as Sportsound pundit Michael Stewart.

Turnbull was also on target for the Steelmen at home to Livingston last week and appears to have put the injury problems that ruined his Celtic switch behind him.

With the news today that Tom Rogic looks to be on his way out of the club for £4m, it would make sense if those resources immediately went towards Turnbull, a midfielder who has plenty of attacking ambition.

That’s not to say Turnbull has the close control skill, experience or all-round quality of Rogic, but over the next half-decade, the 21-year-old could develop into quite the player, perhaps in a similar way to Callum McGregor or Ryan Christie.

As a result, plenty of supporters are in favour of a renewed push to sign him, though he does have some detractors too.

Celtic have the time to continue checking on his performances in the Premiership, with the transfer deadline not until October and Turnbull still having to really prove he is injury-free over an extended period.

These Bhoys fans have taken to Twitter over the last few days to share their thoughts on potentially signing the Scotland U21 international…
