Kyogo Furuhashi has been an electric talent for Celtic since signing from Japan back in 2021 and there’s every chance of seeing plenty more of him in the hoops.
In his three years at the Bhoys, he’s scored 73 goals from 136 appearances and marked himself out as one of the best talents in Scottish football.
So when news broke last week of Manchester City’s transfer interest in Kyogo, it sparked a bit of anxiety within sections of the Celtic support.
Already losing Matt O’Riley to Brighton, it’d be a significant blow to see another of the team’s best performers walk out the door.
Man City now look unlikely to move for Kyogo
Thankfully, it appears that the English champions won’t be making a late transfer call to Celtic in this window.
The Athletic reporter who initially broke the news that Kyogo was on a City shortlist, Sam Lee, shared on social media over the weekend that the move now doesn’t look like happening.

He was speaking in response to another story by David Ornstein from The Athletic indicating that Pep Guardiola had decided not to pursue Copenhagen youngster Orri Oskarsson – the other name on that shortlist.
Lee said on X, formerly Twitter: “So this’ll be the other, younger option, in addition to Kyogo. As David says here, City are unlikely to pursue it and, last I heard, Guardiola was doubting whether they need another striker after all! But Txiki found these two.”
Asked explicitly about Kyogo, Lee replied to a Man City fan saying: “Doesn’t sound like either will happen at this point.”
Brendan Rodgers wasn’t worried about Kyogo Celtic exit
When asked about all the noise last week, Rodgers was relaxed in front of the media. He stated that City hadn’t contacted Celtic about a deal and that the chatter was typical of this stage of the transfer window.
Pep Guardiola played down any more transfer moves beyond Ilkay Gundogan, too.
So if you’re worried about Kyogo heading off then there’s enough evidence now to breathe a little easier.
As always, a lot can happen quickly in the market, so until the deadline passes anything is possible. But nothing appears to be ongoing behind the scenes right now.
