Tobi Oluwayemi made a late Celtic exit on transfer deadline day as the young goalkeeper joined Leyton Orient on a permanent deal.

Orient showed interest in Oluwayemi yesterday afternoon as the League One side looked to bolster their goalkeeping options.

Oluwayemi spent a short spell on loan at Kilmarnock this season as the Celtic goalkeeper made 12 appearances for the Scottish Premiership strugglers.

However, Celtic allowed Oluwayemi to leave on transfer deadline day as a ‘unique situation’ led to a dramatic exit to Leyton Orient as the clock ticked down.

Leyton Orient’s horrific injury jinx that led to Tobi Oluwayemi’s Celtic exit

Orient had already signed goalkeeper Dan Bachmann on loan from Deportivo La Coruna on loan after their other signing, Will Dennis arrived at the club injured.

But Bachmann suffered a ‘freak accident’ in the warm-up prior to Orient’s 1-0 defeat to Port Vale that led to young Irish goalkeeper Killian Cahill being thrown in at the last minute.

Speaking about the capture of Oluwayemi, Director of Football Martin Ling told Leyton Orient’s official website, “It’s a unique situation what has happened this month; waiting for the right goalkeeper to replace Tommy with Dan and then him getting injured straight away.

“We’ve acted fast and believe that bringing in two goalkeepers and the added competition it brings will give us the best opportunity of succeeding in the second half of the season.”

As for young Oluwayemi, it was clear he was never going to get the chance at Celtic and at 22, the young goalkeeper decided to leave Paradise in search for first team football.

Oluwayemi added, “I’m really looking forward to getting started and meeting the lads.

“I’ve spoken to Matt Harrold a lot about the club and he had so many good things to say. I can’t wait to get out there.”

Although Oluwayemi’s move is permanent, his contract only runs until the end of the season and his new manager has challenged him to earn a longer contract.

Good luck to the youngster and we all hope he goes on to have a great career in England.
