This is Celtic’s chance to prove their worth as Alfie Devine transfer update emerges

Alfie Devine is still on Celtic’s transfer radar, but for how long?

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is on Martin O’Neill’s summer transfer wishlist, but Celtic have serious competition for his signature.

For all intents and purposes, Devine was going to return to Preston North End, but their ‘exclusivity period’ to sign the midfielder for ‘£6 million’ has now expired.

Alan Nixon, via Patreon, has now claimed that Southampton, who were kicked out of last season’s Championship play-offs for spying, have joined the race for Devine’s signature.

Is Alfie Devine the kind of player you want to see Celtic sign?

Southampton consider a ‘loan’ move for Celtic transfer target Alfie Devine

It’s clear that Devine is aware of bigger opportunities available to him than Preston, hence why he hasn’t returned to Deepdale for good.

But what’s interesting is that Alex Nixon is claiming that Southampton want to sign the 21-year-old on a ‘loan’ deal.

You have to question whether Tottenham would accept such a deal because Devine’s contract at the London club expires in 2027.

Either way, Southampton joining this race makes it interesting because, from a financial perspective, they still have parachute payments from the Premier League, so they could comfortably beat Celtic in that department.

This is Celtic’s chance to pounce

Celtic have re-signed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but more midfield players are needed, especially if the likes of Arne Engels, Benjamin Nygren and Reo Hatate leave.

Time and time again, the powers that be in the Parkhead boardroom get verbal pelters for doing business at the slowest of slow rates.

Well, this is their chance to pounce on the Devine deal, get O’Neill what he wants, fight off any competition and get the ball rolling for the 2026 summer transfer window.

Adding Devine to the anticipated signing of striker Camilo Duran would significantly boost the mood among Celtic supporters, easing their fears of a repeat of last summer.

Let’s see what you are made of, Celtic.
