‘Unacceptable…’ Chris Sutton drops Celtic transfer claim live on Sky Sports on deadline day

Time is ticking for Celtic to bring in some new faces.

It’s perhaps not what Brendan Rodgers wanted, but he lost some important players in January, including Kyogo Furuhashi joining Rennes.

Added to that, Alex Valle’s loan was cut short, but that was Celtic’s call because many thought Kieran Tierney would join from January..

The issue with that is Tierney won’t join until the summer now, unless something crazy happens from now until the 11pm deadline, because he has a pre-contract agreement on the table with his boyhood club.

Yes, Celtic have brought back Jota, but that isn’t enough to fill the Kyogo void and everyone knows that there is only one recognised striker on the books in Adam Idah.

But, fast forward to the present, and with little time left before the winter transfer window slams shut, no new faces have arrived and Chris Sutton has shared his thoughts.

Chris Sutton’s verdict on Celtic’s January transfer window

Celtic are pushing for the Treble, and added to that, you are playing Bayern Munich over two legs in a huge Champions League showdown.

Sutton made it clear on Sky Sports News (03/02/25 at 4:40 pm) that if no new players arrive, then it would be ‘unacceptable’.

The former striker pointed out that Celtic’s squad would be ‘weaker’ from when the New Year first kicked in.

“Celtic still have work to do in this window,” said Sutton. “Arguably, they could finish this window, in terms of their squad depth, compared to when they started it and that really would be unacceptable.

“When you think about all the Champions League money they have got this season. I suspect, well, I know Celtic will be making a move for a centre-forward, left-back and maybe another wide player. But they need to get bodies in tonight.

On what deals he would like to see: “In terms of Celtic, definitely get a striker in to replace Kyogo Furuhashi, who was tremendous for them.”

Celtic’s confirmed deals in January before deadline slams shut

Rodgers made it clear that he wanted the squad to be strengthened after Kyogo left, but so far, no new names have arrived.

In his first spell, he was pretty vocal and unhappy at some of the deals that were and weren’t concluded.

It’s fair to say that he probably won’t be as publicly as critical now, but that doesn’t mean that if things don’t change or not much is added before the deadline, then he doesn’t have a right to be annoyed.
