Celtic are closing in on the signing of Mario Vuskovic from Hajduk Split, according to Croatian reports this weekend.

It’s said that the Bhoys could sign him as early as this week for a fee of around €5m.

Torino have also been in the hunt for the talented young defender, but it’s Celtic who have made the more lucrative offer to club and player.

It increasingly looks like he is being lined up as the multi-million-pound replacement for outgoing defender Kristoffer Ajer.

Ajer has already told the media this summer he wants to leave Celtic. The Bhoys are said to have rejected two £10m bids, which the Norwegian is ‘distinctly unhappy’ about.

However, getting someone like Vuskovic in the door would surely enable the club to sanction an exit for the Norwegian?

It’s the kind of signing profile we’ve come to expect from Celtic – buying a talent ready for his next career step that can improve and be sold for profit down the line.

However, this is no project. Despite only being 19, Vuskovic looks like the calibre of talent that can come in and compete for first-team places immediately under new boss Ange Postecoglou.

That’s probably why plenty of online supporters are getting excited about the prospect of signing him.

There’s plenty of chatter on social media sites that this defender is exactly the kind of player Celtic should be looking at this summer.
