‘We spoke the other day’ – Brendan Rodgers hints at Luis Palma Celtic future amid transfer interest

Luis Palma’s game time at Celtic has been limited this season.

It hasn’t helped the Honduran that the likes of Daizen Maeda and Nicolas Kuhn have been excellent this year so far and are already ahead of him in the pecking order.

Palma only has 10 appearances to his name this term and is without any goals or assists and that has triggered the rumour mill to suggest that he may be on his way out of Parkhead.

Brendan Rodgers is a fan of Palma the man, but as a player he may not quite fit the Irishman’s style or what he fancies on the pitch.

What Rodgers said about Celtic star Palma’s future

So MLS clubs have been lining up to take the 24-year-old to the States while he was recently claimed to be on the brink of a move to Rayo Vallecano.

Rodgers has now been asked to elaborate on £3.3million-rated Palma‘s future at Celtic and the manager has claimed he remains a Hoops player for now.

But he did acknowledge that the club will “weigh everything up” as the playmaker will likely want more game time than he’s currently being afforded.

“Yeah, yeah, he’s a player that I spoke to just the other day, and he’s a great guy. Everyone loves him here. We love him,” Rodgers said.

“He’s a brilliant lad, works hard every day, trains every day, and probably not getting the game time that he would like. We have to weigh everything up.

“Our first job is to look after our own squad, make sure that’s ready, and by the end of this month set up for the challenges for the rest of the season. If that allows some players to go out, then that can and may still happen.

“At this moment in time, he is here and a part of the squad.”

Luis Palma has interest in Spain and in MLS

Genoa-linked Palma was left out of the squad for Celtic’s 4-1 romp over Ross County on Saturday but it was for a personal issue.

And Rodgers reiterated as much when asked again if the winger was still away.

“No, he’s back, yeah, he’s here now. So, yeah, it was just something that happened overnight, and I could see, I sensed with him the feeling, and then to sit in a coach three and a half hours, going up north probably wasn’t going to be the best thing for him.

“So, I just gave him the weekend, to be with his family, and then reset again after the weekend.

“So, he’s come back in, and it’s been a hard time for him, losing both grandparents, who were so close.

“He’s ready to go again, and he’ll be part of the squad tomorrow.”
