Why excitement about Van Crombrugge remarks and a potential Celtic move is misguided
I never like to be the one with the pin when Celtic rumours are ballooning, but Anderlecht goalkeeper Hendrik Van Crombrugge isn’t coming to Paradise.
While yes, an experienced leader in goals would be a fine thing for the Bhoys, some comments made for DHNet have been taken a little out of context.
The Anderlecht stopper said [DHNet]:
“What I like in clubs is tradition. That’s why I love Glasgow Celtic.
“If someone tells me one day that I can go and play for them I’ll be off immediately asking “where do I sign?”!
“Mind you my manager, Vincent Kompany, would laugh reading this. He would tell me it wouldn’t suit my style because it would be too kick and rush there!”

Kick and rush? Under Ange Postecoglou? And the man wants a move! But no; the context was that van Crombrugge is fiercely loyal to Anderlecht. Being asked a cheeky question about who else he’d play for, he gave an extreme example.
He’s not even the first Anderlecht goalie to be converted to the Celtic cause. Matz Sels was convinced of the club’s glories by friend and fellow footballer Tom Pietermaat [Daily Record].
The pair have even travelled for matches together. Perhaps it’s the influence of Martin O’Neill signing Joos Valgaeren. Or, more recently, Jason Denayer, Dedryck Boyata or… Logan Bailly?
Celtic have Belgian fans, van Crombrugge included
Either way, the club clearly have fans in Belgium. That does not mean, however, that van Crombrugge is signing for Celtic. On the contrary, he continued [DHNet]:
“This has actually been the first summer in a long time I’ve not had to deal with transfer speculation.
“The important thing for me is to feel good and respected at a club and that is certainly the case at Anderlecht.
“My contract extension until 2025 is the best proof of mutual respect.”
So, there you have it: nothing’s happening. There is a kernel of well, something though. After Barkas’ performance on Tuesday night, the Goalkeeper Question has reared its head again.
Yes, Celtic probably need a first-choice goalkeeper if Barkas continues to make mistakes. At the very least, an upgrade on the bench would provide considerable comfort to Bhoys supporters.
However, again: sorry. Belgian stopper Hendrik Van Crombrugge isn’t coming to Paradise.
