Celtic’s transfer struggles exposed, only eight of the last 20 signings before this season are still here

Celtic’s transfer policy has been under the microscope in the last few days.

A disappointing window has culminated in supporters issuing a vote of no confidence in the board.

The decision came after Celtic fans blasted the board’s statement, in which they defended the decision to not spend heavily.

In the past, the policy of buying cheaply and selling for profit has worked wonders but the last few years have seen more misses than hits.

From the 2023/24 and 2024/25 transfer windows, only Kasper Schmeichel is a regular starter but perhaps more alarmingly, only eight of those 20 signings are still at the club.

Every Celtic player signed in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 transfer windows

While those who are still at Celtic all have roles to play in the side, only Schmeichel can count himself as a nailed-on starter.

As for those who have departed Celtic Park, a number of these were brought in for relatively expensive fees such as Gustaf Lagerbielke for more than £3m and Adam Idah for £9m.

It is an extremely high turnover for a squad, and it is alarming that so many in a small amount of time have already headed for the exit door.

Are Celtic being cautious after big-money failures?

While the Celtic statement said that reports about their spending were way off the mark and that they had invested a lot more into the playing squad, the figures being discussed don’t make for good reading.

The two biggest expenses of the 2025 summer transfer window were Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Sebastian Tounekti – both of whom arrived late in the window.

Previous big-money buys like Arne Engels have yet to really hit the ground running while the club’s second most expensive signing of all time has just left for £2m less than what the Bhoys paid for him.

Everyone knows the money is there, but after being stung in the past, are Celtic now reluctant to spend the big bucks?
