Celtic player ratings vs Aberdeen as ‘wasteful’ and ‘toothless’ 5/10 duo disappoint

Celtic squandered the chance to win the Treble after losing on penalties to Aberdeen.

By doing so, Brendan Rodgers will have to wait to become the first Celtic manager in history to win three domestic Trebles in his reign at Celtic Park, moving ahead of Jock Stein, who was previously tied on two.

It looked as if the first half would be one to forget but in the end the hefty amount of possession broke down Aberdeen’s resistance as Cameron Carter-Vickers‘ header from an Arne Engels corner was deflected by Alfie Dorrington to give the Bhoys the lead.

The Bhoys continued to dominate but were by no means at their best and their failure to kill the game off caught them out as Kasper Schmeichel failed to deal with Shayden Morris’ cross and tipped it into his own net with eight minutes to play.

Extra time was just as tense, with neither side willing to blink first and moving into penalty shootouts.

Eventually, it wasn’t to be as both Callum McGregor and Alistair Johnston missed their spot kicks as Aberdeen won the Scottish Cup for the first time in over 30 years.

With that, here’s how 67 Hail Hail rated the performances of each individual after the defeat.

Celtic player ratings vs Aberdeen

Kasper Schmeichel – 6

Made a rare, but terrible, mistake from someone who has been Mr Consistent this season.

Alistair Johnston – 6

Was okay in patches and defended well but wasn’t anywhere near his best going forward.

Cameron Carter-Vickers – 8

The best defender on the pitch for Celtic this afternoon. His header led to the goal and he was as solid as ever defensively.

Liam Scales – 6

Rodgers was slammed for leaving Maik Nawrocki out of the squad, with Scales the man that fans would’ve swapped out of the side. Wasn’t his worst performance but not one that fills you with too much confidence.

Greg Taylor – 6

If this is to be Taylor’s final appearance for Celtic then what a way to bow out. When the Hoops were weathering the storm in the final minutes of normal time, he was there blocking everything.

Callum McGregor (C) – 6

Ran the midfield and lead by example, as he always does in these cup finals but missed his spot kick in the final.

Arne Engels – 6

Was a passenger to start off with but grew into the game and delivered the corner that resulted in Celtic’s goal, as well as hitting the post in the second half.

Paulo Bernardo – 5

Was given the nod over Luke McCowan but didn’t seize his opportunity. Was non-existent at times and lacked energy.

Nicolas Kuhn – 5

Far too many loose passes and looked sluggish all afternoon. Was rightly hooked shortly after the hour mark after a toothless performance.

Daizen Maeda – 5

Missed a great chance to win the game in normal time and was wasteful throughout. Maeda isn’t in Japan’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers and it’s for the best as he needs a rest.

Adam Idah – 5

Idah fed off scraps all afternoon and was given little to work with but as the main number nine, you need to make your own luck. Rodgers needs a striker to be his number one priority this summer.

Substitutes

James Forrest – 6

A lot brighter than either of the wingers that started ahead of him. A bundle of energy and injected some life into the Hoops but such a shame that he had to go off injured.

Yang – 6

Had a great chance to make it 2-0 when he came on as a substitute but his shot was blocked. Never gives up though.

Luke McCowan- 6

Worked really hard to win the ball back when he lost it and was always willing to try and make something happen.

Johnny Kenny – 6

Just like Idah, failed to make much of an impact off the bench after replacing Forrest.

Jeffrey Schlupp – 6

A stunning effort cannoned off the crossbar in extra time as the on-loan utility man offered more than Bernardo.
