Jimmy Thelin’s brutally honest verdict as Celtic leave it late against Aberdeen

Jimmy Thelin was classy as he surveyed Aberdeen’s defeat to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

The Pittodrie boss had seen his Aberdeen side lose just once in their last ten fixtures as the pressure heaped on Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy.

Thelin will have been confident about heaping more misery on Nancy but the Bhoys had different ideas with a relentless performance as Celtic beat Aberdeen.

The 3-1 scoreline didn’t really reflect the true nature of the game with Celtic recording an incredible 31 shots on goal and an xG of 4.5.

Celtic boss Nancy was delighted with the result but in true classy fashion, Thelin didn’t attempt to make any excuses for Aberdeen’s defeat at Parkhead.

Jimmy Thelin admits Aberdeen ‘were a bit lucky’ after Celtic Park defeat

Celtic now move to within six points of Hearts at the top of the table and six points ahead of Rangers who lost to Hearts.

And speaking post-match, Thelin was refreshingly honest with his take on his Aberdeen side’s Celtic Park performance.

Thelin told BBC Scotland: “We were on the back foot from minute one. Celtic were on top of us. We can do better, how we attack the game this way.

“Then, of course a red card. The start of the second half, we were a bit lucky. Some good saves but also we need some luck. We survived that moment.

“Kjartan [Kjartansson] and Kenan [Bilalovic] did really well in that moment and it gave us a chance to grab a point. We were disappointed after the game because we were so close.

“So of course, we were in that moment, really disappointed after the game, because we were so close with just a few minutes left.

“And you get the luck you needed before that, and then in the end, that goal to make the score 2-1, maybe a bit too easy for them, but that’s football sometimes.”

When Celtic next play Rangers and Hearts

Nancy has games against Livingston and Motherwell to negotiate before the end of 2025. After that, the New Year derby against Rangers at Celtic Park beckons on the 3rd of January.

Celtic could bury Rangers’ slim title hopes with a win to keep up the pace to Hearts before the Tynecastle clash.

That game is on the calendar to be played on the 25th of January after Celtic face Dundee United (H) and then Falkirk (A) and Bologna (A).

The big games just keep coming for Nancy but for now, the Celtic boss can relax and enjoy tonight’s win.
