Kris Boyd makes interesting Luke McCowan claim in the morning after Celtic’s draw at Dundee

Celtic’s defensive troubles since the New Year continued at Dens Park on Tuesday night.

Up until 2025, Celtic had only conceded four goals in the Premiership this season, but since then, seven goals have been let in by the champions.

That included Celtic’s 3-3 draw at Dundee, where even if the most ardent of supporters are honest, it was probably the right result given the level of performance from the team.

Luke McCowan opened the scoring after five minutes and, in the first half alone, the champions should have put the game to bed.

But they didn’t and Dundee hit back twice to level the scores, before going ahead and then being pegged back by an Arne Engels stoppage-time penalty.

From a positive perspective, McCowan is proving his worth and Kris Boyd made some interesting comments on the Celtic summer signing.

It was a stunning header from McCowan, who was handed a start by Rodgers as he, once again, rotated his XI ahead of some huge matches.

The 27-year-old joined his boyhood club in the summer from Dundee and Boyd thinks he has been the best signing of the lot.

From club-record transfer Arne Engels to defender Auston Trusty, Boyd thinks McCowan has been the ‘shining light’, as he told Sky Sports News (15/01/25 at 10:25 am).

“McCowan scored the first goal, you could argue that the £1 million that Celtic spent on Luke McCowan at the start of the season is the best bit of business they have done since the summer,” said Boyd.

“Engels has been up and down. £11 million. Trusty, £6.5 million, around about that and he has struggled, at times. Idah, for whatever reason, he came up last year and looked hungry. He was throwing defenders about. Using his physique and presence. Really bullying defenders, but for whatever reason it isn’t happening right now.

“And, Luke McCowan has been the shining light for Brendan Rodgers, in terms of the games he has played from that summer recruitment. He is the one who has done really, really well. Again, last night, going to his old team. What a header that was. A great ball from Greg Taylor.”

McCowan’s stats for Celtic this season

Celtic have two huge Champions League games this month – at home to Young Boys and then a trip to the Midlands to take on Aston Villa.

McCowan hasn’t started a game in Europe and you feel that, as of now, he deserves that chance to start, alongside his captain Callum McGregor.

Given that he has only played under 1,000 minutes this term and doesn’t take penalties like Engels, then his goal contributions are pretty healthy.
