Martin O’Neill has the chance to spring a major surprise with his team selection for Celtic vs St Mirren.

The Hoops return to Parkhead for the final game of the regular season and will be backed by the Green Brigade after the club allowed them to return to the stands with immediate effect.

Although Callum Osmand has been spotted back in training, Celtic are struggling with injuries in the defensive department, particularly at right-back, which could force the Bhoys into a surprise change.

Martin O’Neill may opt for three-at-the-back against St Mirren

Colby Donovan is the latest defender to succumb to injury, leaving Anthony Ralston as his only option in the right-back slot while Julian Araujo is unlikely to play again this season.

Ralston has hardly caught the eye during that time but with the options available, O’Neill may be tempted to swap to a three-at-the-back formation.

Liam Scales, Kieran Tierney, Benjamin Arthur and Auston Trusty are all capable of playing in the centre-back role, with Tierney likely to move inside as a left-centre-back and then have Scales in the middle and Trusty on the right-hand side.

That will then create the need for two wing-backs, as well as two up top.

Celtic’s predicted XI to face St Mirren

Viljami Sinisalo will start in goal for the Hoops behind the back three of Tierney, Scales and Trusty.

Marcelo Saracchi comes into the starting XI as a wing-back and will be joined by Hyunjun Yang on the opposite flank, where he thrived under Wilfried Nancy.

Moving into the middle of the park and the trio of Callum McGregor, Benjamin Nygren and Reo Hatate will line up.

Completing the side will be the duo of Daizen Maeda and Kelechi Iheanacho, who both deserve starts after their displays against Dundee last week.
