Peter Schmeichel was ringside as Celtic suffered a cruel Champions League exit in Germany.
That Diazen Maeda goal from the first leg at Celtic Park made things very interesting heading to Bavaria, but not as interesting as many expected.
With seconds left on the clock, the Champions League playoff tie was heading to extra time and Bayern Munich were fearing the worst.
This came after Nicolas Kuhn opened the scoring in the second half, and in truth, Celtic should have put the game to bed during the opening 45 minutes.
But still, Brendan Rodgers’ side had defied expectations and were not just causing an upset, but playing with serious quality with and without the ball.
That’s when Alphonso Davies struck the cruel blow and scored with seconds left on the clock.
As you can imagine, the scenes and mood post-match inside that Celtic dressing room were pretty low.

Peter Schmeichel told Celtic players to be ‘proud’ post-match after Bayern Munich defeat
Peter Schmeichel has followed Celtic like a hawk ever since his son joined the club in the summer and he was working for CBS on the game in Munich.
After the match, as you can understand, everyone was gutted, but Kasper’s dad explained how he went to the Celtic players ‘shook their hands’ and told them to be ‘proud’ of what they did.
But the legendary Manchester United keeper understood and explained that they all looked ‘devastated’ because of the manner of the defeat, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (18/02/25 at 10:15 pm).
“They looked devastated,” said Peter Schmeichel about the Celtic players post-match.
“I made my way over and shook everybody’s hands and said, ‘you did fantastically well and you have everything to be proud about’.
“They were so close to get to extra-time and then it got taken away by literally the last kick of the game. It’s cruel.”
Celtic have a Treble to chase
Yes, this will continue to sting for a while, but look at the positives and the bigger picture.
Celtic are making serious progress in Europe and they are on course to win the domestic Treble, as the 13-point lead at the top of the Premiership table is the cherry on top of the cake.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 1 | 26 | 22 | 3 | 1 | 76 | 12 | 64 | 69 | |
| 2 | 26 | 17 | 5 | 4 | 54 | 20 | 34 | 56 | |
| 3 | 26 | 11 | 5 | 10 | 34 | 39 | -5 | 38 | |
| 4 | 26 | 10 | 7 | 9 | 32 | 31 | 1 | 37 | |
| 5 | 26 | 8 | 10 | 8 | 37 | 37 | 0 | 34 | |
| 6 | 26 | 9 | 4 | 13 | 30 | 39 | -9 | 31 |
Only Celtic can stop themselves from going all the way and winning yet another Treble under the services of Rodgers.
