Ruthless Celtic fans had plenty to say about Stephen Welsh’s display before his Cork City injury

Stephen Welsh returned to Celtic this summer after a loan spell.

Welsh was farmed out to KV Mechelen in January to gain more minutes, and his time there was fairly successful having played 17 times for the Belgian top-flight side.

The defender doesn’t appear to have a long-term future with Celtic though, with Sky Sports reporting Welsh is on the transfer list at Parkhead.

He played 45 minutes against Queen’s Park as captain, and was set to do the same in the second-half of last night’s 2-1 win over Cork City.

But Welsh suffered a dislocated shoulder and was forced off after 72 minutes with the score level at 1-1. It’s the fourth time he’s experienced the issue.

Celtic fans lambast Welsh’s display vs Cork City

Of course, the attention now is on his injury and Brendan Rodgers noted that Welsh may now need to consider surgery to permanently correct the recurring problem.

But before that, Celtic fans were frustrated with Welsh’s 27 minutes on the park, as they blamed him entirely for Cork’s equalising strike.

@nath1888 posted: “Can’t stand Stephen Welsh”.

@NoleBhoy said: “And that’s why Stephen Welsh shouldn’t be in the squad.”

@seantburt7 asked: “When will the Stephen Welsh experiment be over. I’m sure he’s a nice guy and try’s his best but for the love of god how’s he still even getting a sniff.”

@CelticLass07 has one wish: “hopefully stephen welsh’s next move from celtic is a permanent one.”

@mmgcon_mark wrote: “Think it’s safe to say goodbye to Stephen Welsh he is honking”.

And @Ulysses109 summed it all up: “Stephen Welsh is cooked I’m afraid. Can’t last half a game and just isn’t very good at defending. Been pretty clear for a few seasons he isn’t at that level”.

What Brendan Rodgers said about Welsh’s injury

Rodgers addressed Welsh’s setback to Celtic TV, and it may harm Celtic’s ability to offload him this summer.

The manager said: “He’s done his shoulder again. It’s the fourth time it’s popped out. You know when it keeps coming out like that, there’s the possibility of an operation so he has to have a wee think about that.

“By the time the physios got on, it had popped back in but the pain was too sore so we took him off.”
